We sell a hardware device called the REG-1, that makes it possible for two main groups—researchers and consumers—to explore the influence that their intention has on the physical world. We also provide software that provides real-time feedback, and that can be used to store, chart, and analyze the results, which can then be uploaded to an online database.

The device outputs a stream of bits that is based on quantum mechanical physical events. Essentially, it creates unpredictable outcomes using principles of physics. Unlike the "heads" or "tails" of a tossed coin, these outcomes are fundamentally impossible to predict. However, decades of research at a place called the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) lab has shown that people may be able to affect the output of these devices simply by focusing on the outcomes.

The device connects to a computer via USB, and the computer uses its output to control graphical feedback on the screen. For example, the user will try to change the color of a light on the screen, or make a graph move up or down based on his or her intention.

It depends who you ask, but most of the research that has been conducted, and almost all of the customers we have spoken with, say "Yes." It is rare to hear of someone who can create any definitive influence on the device on their first tries, but many users have commented that they have been able to get better with time. Many users have found that their REG-1 results correlate with their states of mind or what is happening in the environment around them. In some cases, people claim that working to achieve good REG-1 results makes them more aware of themselves and more effective in daily life.

REG devices are very precise scientific instruments that produce output that usually has very specific statistical properties. When a person attempts to influence an REG device, the person can pre-state an intention for the device's behavior, and the statistical properties of the output can be reliably tested against the device's usual behavior. If a result is created that corresponds with the user's intention, then statistics can be used to find out how likely it is that the result could have occurred by chance. If the result is extremely unlikely to have occurred by chance, then we can conclude that the user (called an operator) has somehow influenced the process.

It is important to note that there are no means recognized by established science by which a person should be able to influence the REG. If the mind's effect on the REG is real, it will require that we re-think almost all of our assumptions about the physical world and how it operates. We have shown that the mind-REG effect can not be described in terms of the classical physical forces, and it shows a number of behaviors that are very difficult to explain. If nothing else, evidence from REG experiments shows a direct and unexplainable connection between the mind and the physical world. The implications extend far beyond the realm of REGs.

There is not a quick answer, but you must imagine that what we are describing here is only the tip of the iceberg. For one thing, there is the entire issue of how one goes about creating the effects that are described. Some individuals buy the device to see if they can create the effects, or to determine which factors in their lives influence their ability to affect it. People interested in meditation and in the exploration of the mind are common customers, and so are researchers who wish to explore the effect or reveal undiscovered properties of mind-matter interaction.

Many of our customers have quickly come to realize that generating an effect with the REG-1 requires a deep understanding of one's mind and the way one relates to the world. In playing with the REG-1, one can get a glimpse into how certain states of mind facilitate the achievement of intended REG results. This can help people to become more self-reflective and to develop a deeper understanding of how the mind processes information; it can lead to greater emotional intelligence.

Finally, the device shows signs of producing interesting effects when groups of people are interacting. PEAR FieldREG research has indicated that statistically significant results are more likely to occur when people feel "resonant," like they are "connected," or in a state of high creativity and engagement. As such, people might use the REG-1 device to measure the effectiveness of their speeches, workshops, or performances, or as a secondary indicator of information in other subjective contexts.
